I was very honored and surprised to find there is an explorer from my very home town; Dundalk, Ireland!
Thomas Coulter (1793–1843) explored the areas of Mexico and California mostly finding new types of cactus plant!
There's even a tree named after him!
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Coulter+pine

I know, it's not really as exciting as landing on the moon but, hey, I'll take any sort of recognition for a fellow Dundalk person!

Charles Nainoa Thompson, Hawaii USA

Nainoa was born in 1953 (still alive) and explored since 1976. He explored how the ancient Hawaiians actually came to Hawaii by building a canoe without any machines to help him. He also explored how you navigate without a GPS. He used the sky, stars, birds and wind patterns to get to New Zealand and back to Hawaii.
